Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations: How the Credit System Works

  2. Supplying low carbon fuels. Producing or importing renewable fuels like ethanol, renewable diesel, or biogas creates credits based on how much cleaner they are than the baseline.
  3. Advancing cleaner end use. Supplying energy for electric vehicles or other low emission transportation can also count, which links the fuel rules to the broader shift in how Canadians travel.

Credits can be traded, banked for future years, or used to meet a supplier’s own obligation. In theory this steers investment toward the cheapest available reductions, since a supplier with an easy path to lower intensity can sell surplus credits to one facing higher costs.
